Goliath’s final season renewal is a good thing (even though we’d love more)
Amazon has renewed Goliath for a fourth and final season. While we’d certainly love to have more, this final season renewal is a good thing.
A month after the third season was released, Amazon has made a decision on Goliath‘s fate. The legal drama, starring Billy Bob Thornton, has been renewed for a fourth season. However, that news came with the confirmation that it would be the last season.
As much as we’d love more from the series, the final season renewal is actually a good thing. After all, Amazon could have just canceled the series without giving the writers time to wrap everything up. We just have to look at Patriot and The Tick to see that the streamer will cancel without time. The final season warning, which is also something The Man in the High Castle got, allows the writers to wrap up any lingering questions and offer us a season that we’ll love.

But couldn’t it go on for longer? Sure, there are plenty of legal dramas out there that continue for years to come. We just have to look at Law & Order: SVU, which is a mixture of crime and legal, to see how it’s possible. Suits has just come to an end after nine seasons. There are many others still on the go. It’s not like the storylines aren’t there.

Something you’ve got to consider is, though, do you really want a show to go on and on? Isn’t there a point where the characters don’t really have any more stories to tell? Maybe the writers have developed the characters as much as they’d like. Eventually, drama is added in for drama’s sake. Just look at the way NCIS is going around in circles with the Bishop/Torres relationship.
We want Goliath to go out on a high. That means bringing the show to an end before it starts getting drawn out. I find four or five seasons of a show a great point to end most tales. I’m still a major fan of the way Supernatural‘s fifth season ended and think that would have been an excellent series finale. Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘s fifth season finale would have been a good overall ending for me.
Too many shows, after around the fifth season, start feeling stale. They don’t have the magic they once did. We don’t have to worry about that for Goliath.
Now, the writers get to go into this season and think about how to make it explosive and memorable. They will be able to round out the tale, making it four seasons worth of excellent content to binge-watch over and over again.
