After five seasons, The Magicians is coming to an end. Is this a show that Amazon Prime could and should save or is it best ending?

After five seasons, The Magicians is ending. SYFY has canceled the series, with the current season finale airing as the series finale on Apr. 1. However, there are calls for a streamer to pick up the show. Could and should Amazon save The Magicians from cancellation?

Let me be honest and say that I’d predicted The Magicians ending after the fifth season back in December 2019. It isn’t that I think the show is bad, but that live ratings for cable shows is declining. And like broadcast, cable networks need the live ratings because of the advertiser revenue. I’d also predicted that live ratings for Seasn 5 would be considerably down from Season 4 after the events of the Season 4 finale.

But that doesn’t mean I think the show should be canceled. It is one of the most inclusive and progressive shows on TV right now. It’s been inclusive from the very beginning, whether it’s including people of color or the LGBTQ characters or it’s through the raising awareness about mental health.

We need these types of shows on the air. It’s important for people to see themselves on TV. I remember my husband not understanding the huge deal of a female superhero or understanding that it mattered to see that until he saw our daughter’s face light up when she saw someone like her as a superhero. It’s easy to assume we don’t need something because it doesn’t serve us, but it’s essential to think of those who don’t match our views of the world. The Magicians has always done that.

But does this mean Amazon should save The Magicians? Honestly, I think Amazon just needs to keep creating fresh content that is like The Magicians in terms of diverse characters. It’s got that with shows like Hunters and there’s a chance for that with The Boys, Carnival Row, and many more originals. The streamer is raising awareness on mental health with Undone.

If Amazon wants to save The Magicians because it’s a great show and it’s inclusive, great. If there isn’t the storyline available to keep things fresh, then maybe it is time to bring things to a close. But I am of the opinion that all things must come to an end eventually, but I know that’s not what a lot of you want to hear.

Five seasons is a good run for TV now. There are only a handful of shows that manage to get past that (unless you’re The CW). Just look at the Amazon and Netflix shows that haven’t even gotten past one or two seasons.

This isn’t like The Expanse where it was suddenly canceled without time to wrap up storylines; where there was so much source material still to explore. The Magicians has arguably had a great run.

By the sounds of things, The Magicians Season 5 finale will work as a series finale, even though it wasn’t written as one. If it ties up enough loose ends, there may not be a need to see the show continue, even though I do love it. What else can the cast and creators bring to the screen?
