Last year, it was all about The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. For the Emmys 2019, it was all about another Amazon Prime series: Fleabag.

It’s another awards season. At the last Emmys, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel swept up the majority of the comedy awards. This year, that honor goes to another Amazon Prime Original. Fleabag took over at the Emmys 2019.

The wins are certainly well deserved. Fleabag Season 2 was more than worth the wait, offering more than just comedy but a look into mental health. It’s a show that has a hugely flawed lead female, which makes her feel grounded and relatable.

More from Amazon Originals

Out of the 11 nominations it received, Fleabag took home six wins. One of those was for Outstanding Comedy Seriesfor which it was up against the list of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Russian DollThe Good Place, and so many other great shows from the season.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge also took home awards for writing and lead actress. Harry Bradbeer took home the award for best directing for the Season 2 premiere and Gary Dollner walked away with the win for Outstanding Single-Camera Editing for that same episode.

Other Amazon wins at Emmys 2019

It wasn’t all about FleabagThe Marvelous Mrs. Maisel did walk away with two major wins out of its multiple nominations. When you include the Creative Emmys from the week before, it took the most wins for Amazon Prime during the Emmys 2019, walking away with 16 wins out of 34 nominations.

The biggest wins have to be the Outstanding Supporting Actress and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a comedy. Alex Borstein walked away with the win for her portrayal of Susie once more. This year, Tony Shalhoub finally got the win for his portrayal of Abe, Midge’s dad, and it really is about time!

It’s worth noting that Luke Kirby walked away with the Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his role of Lenny Bruce during the Creative Emmys week. And you just know that was well deserved.

Finally, we’d be amiss if we didn’t mention the win for Ben Wishaw. He walked away with the trophy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for the Amazon Original, A Very English Scandal. If you haven’t checked out the limited series yet, now is the time to do so.

A year of minimal upset

This year didn’t see too many shocks or surprises. At least, not in my opinion. The best thing comes from the history-making win for Billy Porter in Pose. He’s the first openly gay black man to win an Emmy in the 71-year history.
