Variety exclusively reports that Amazon Prime’s upcoming Lord of the Rings series has cast Midsommar star, Will Poulter, in a leading role.

It looks like Will Poulter, who recently starred in Ari Aster’s horror film, Midsommar, has been cast in the upcoming Lord of the Rings series. Variety claims they discovered this information per their sources.

Neither Amazon nor Poulter’s reps have commented yet. As for what role Poulter will be playing in the series, we don’t yet know. Like everything else in regards to this series, it is being kept under wraps. But it is expected to be a leading role. Variety also exclusively reported actress Markella Kavenagh’s casting in late July.

More from Amazon Originals

Will Poulter being cast in the Lord of the Rings is a big deal for the young actor. Due to the franchise’s popularity, Amazon is generating a great deal of buzz surrounding the series.

Along with Midsommar, Poulter also starred in Netflix’s first interactive episode of Black Mirror, Bandersnatch, and had a lead role in The Maze Runner films.

It’s clear that Amazon is hoping Lord of the Rings will be their version of Game of Thrones. They even hired a Game of Thrones alum in Bryan Cogman, who will be a consulting producer on the series.

We don’t yet know what the plotline of the series will be, but we can expect it to cover new storylines predating The Fellowship of the Ring. Based on a cryptic tweet from the official account, it looks like the show may have something to do with the Second Age, the time when the rings initially came into existence.

We also know the series will have the most episodes per season out of all Amazon Originals so far. Amazon ordered 20 episodes for the show’s first season. These will likely be divided somehow.
