When Lord of the Rings debuts its whole first season, it will be the longest season out of all Amazon Originals. Just how many episodes is it going to have?

We know very little about Lord of the Rings right now. The upcoming Amazon Original has only just started to find its cast and the series isn’t expected to debut until 2021. However, one thing we do know is that the series will have the most episodes per season out of all Amazon Originals.

The current plan is to have 20 episodes in the first season. Most Amazon Originals have 10 episodes at the most, with many choosing to stick to eight. The shorter seasons all to remain hyper-focused on the overall storyline and not fill in the gaps with filler material.

However, it looks like the eight- to 10-episode season isn’t going to be enough for Lord of the Rings. Amazon has allowed 20 episodes to the first season, although there are slim chances that all 20 episodes will be released in one go. I’d hazard a guess that the streamer will release in wo halves, similarly to Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and No Good Nick on Netflix.

This won’t be the first time Amazon does something like this, but it’s usually reserved for Amazon Kids shows. I’ve not known a drama release in this way on Amazon Prime Video.

Having 20 episodes will allow for more detail. Lord of the Rings certainly has a lot of depth. There’s a whole world (and more) that has never been visited. We know bits and pieces of events, especially around the Second Age, but not the full detail. This is where the Amazon prequel series will come into play.

The known events can’t change. The Tolkien Estate has veto power and has stated that the canon cannot change, according to BGR. It’s a fair enough request, especially since there have been fans of the novels for decades. However, there’s still plenty to explore and 20 episodes for the first season sounds about right to do it.
