The Aeronauts is probably not getting an IMAX run
The Aeronauts was set for an exclusive IMAX release for a week before the theatrical debut. That now probably isn’t happening with the change to the release plans.
If you were hoping to watch The Aeronauts in IMAX theaters, you may be out of luck. With the change to the theatrical release of the Amazon Studios movie, there’s little chance that the IMAX run will happen.
The Aeronauts was originally going to be released nationwide on Nov. 1. The week before that, it was going to get an IMAX-exclusive release. This was a movie filmed for IMAX theaters with the IMAX cameras, so it’s clear that this was the plan all along. However, things changed recently.

Amazon decided not to release the awards-hopeful movie in the traditional way. Instead, it will air in select theaters in December, before becoming exclusive to Amazon Prime Video two weeks later. In a way, it will limit the earning potential but it increases the viewer potential for the movie starring Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones.
The Aeronauts isn’t the only movie getting this less than traditional form of release. Adam Driver’s The Report will also be released in select theaters before getting a Prime Video debut weeks later. Amazon wants to maximize exposure to its Prime members for some of its biggest releases.
However, The Hollywood Reporter shares that this means problems for the IMAX deal. IMAX, like most other movie theaters, want a 90-day exclusivity to the theaters (not the individual theaters but to cinemas in general). Since that’s not going to happen with Amazon, then IMAX isn’t on the cards.
If Amazon decides that two weeks in theaters and then straight to Prime is a good idea for movies (something that Netflix did with Roma, too) then it will be interesting to see if the theatrical exclusivity will have to change. Streaming services have completely changed the way we watch movies and TV shows.
