While Netflix may have more Originals, Amazon looks to be working on catching up. Amazon Prime landed more TV projects in 2018 than other streaming services.

Amazon Prime Video has been behind Netflix for original TV content for a while. That’s not surprising since Netflix started earlier. However, Amazon Studios is working on catching up and that showed in the 2017-2018 TV development cycle. Amazon is the top streamer for new TV projects in 2018.

According to Deadline, Amazon gained 14 new projects compared to Netflix’s 12 and Hulu’s six. Apple, CBS All Access, STARZ, and other streaming services were much further behind. Some of the projects gained during this time period were The BoysGood Omens, and Utopia. While two are set to be released this year, the other is only just on the casting phase.

More from Amazon

It’s an exciting time to be part of Amazon Prime Video. Unlike Netflix and Hulu, the Amazon shows don’t come to DVD and Blu-ray. If you want to watch them (legally, of course), you need to be signed up to the streaming service. So there are plenty of people out there missing out on great content.

This is also good news for the changes coming to streaming. With DC Universe, Disney, and Warner Bros. bringing streaming services of their own, the online platforms need to start creating their own fresh content. Netflix is under threat with the news that Friends, which it paid $100 million for a non-exclusive license for in 2019, and many of The CW shows will likely be leaving the service for WarnerMedia later this year.

Amazon isn’t under as much threat because there’s a lot more on offer with the Prime membership. However, topping the new TV projects in 2018 shows that the company is certainly taking the streaming threat seriously to bring more original content.

There’s more to come for Amazon Studios. It certainly made waves at Sundance this year, making some big bids for the likes of The Report and Brittany Runs a Marathon. While the report success is only for the TV Originals, there are signs that Amazon is putting up a fight for the movies, too.
