Homecoming Season 2 ending: Explaining the dark twists
Breaking down the ending to Homecoming Season 2
There’s no doubt that Homecoming Season 2 took some dark turns in the end. It wasn’t the happy ending that we’d hoped to see, but it also felt real and raw.
It’s time to break down the gnarly twists and turns. This gives us a chance to look at the potential for a third season, especially to continue Walter’s storyline.
Of course, there are spoilers in this post for the Homecoming Season 2 finale, just in case you haven’t seen it yet and couldn’t guess from the title.
A connection to the first season of Homecoming
First of all, there is a connection back to Homecoming Season 1. At the end, Julia Roberts’s Heidi sees Stephan James’s Walter at a diner. She asks him if he recognizes him, which he says he doesn’t. However, Heidi notices that everything on the table is organized to a tee, except a fork that points to the window.

It’s possible that Walter did remember things. This was a connection to Heidi’s organized habits, something Walter would pick up on.
During the Homecoming Season 2 finale, Walter slips the staff with the memory-erasing serum. He then asks Alex/Jackie, if she remembers him. Alex doesn’t, but she does admit that she knows what it’s like to wake up alone and refuses to leave Temple.

Accidents and intentional drugging
Throughout the series, we learned that Alex/Jackie had accidentally been injected with the serum. She was never meant to lose her memory. And it turned out that Walter was the one to inject her.
Alex had actually wanted to inject Walter so he wouldn’t remember filing a complaint against Leonard Geist. After all, Alex’s job at Homecoming was to clean up after everyone else’s messes to make sure nobody heard about them. Yet, Geist (the owner of the company) had no idea this was happening and he wanted to put a stop to it when he found out.
Geist had, in a way, tried to warn his staff that something was coming. He knew that they were going to end up losing their memories. Yet, they continued to turn a blind eye to the atrocities within the company and follow like sheep.
Questions for Homecoming Season 3
While there are certainly questions for a third season, there’s the question of whether there needs to be one. The story could continue with a focus on one of the staff members now with no memory. Or we could follow Geist a little more.
We could even see Walter help other victims of Homecoming. Maybe even try to recruit Alex into helping him.
Walter won’t get his memories back, though. There’s a bittersweet element to the way the second season ended. And while we can imagine the things that Walter could do, I’m not sure whether the story needs to be told.
Homecoming Season 2 did drag out a bit. I’m still wondering whether that was even needed. The first season could have worked extremely well as a limited series. What do you think?
Homecoming is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
