Jennifer Kent has another project in the works. It may become an Amazon Original movie, as Amazon Studios looks to finance the production.

Jennifer Kent is looking to bring another period piece to the screens. This time, Amazon Studios wants to finance the production, as well as gain worldwide licensing rights.

Deadline reports that Amazon Studios is currently in negotiation talks. They started earlier this week, while the Toronto International Film Festival began. And it’s not all that surprising that Amazon Studios wants to finance this project.

Kent has already been hugely successful with movies as of late. She followed the terrifying movie The Babadook with The Nightingale, both gaining critical praise. While the latter was a period piece, Kent is turning her attention to a slightly different time period and country. She’ll go from 1825 Tasmania to 1890s United States, with an adaptation of the book Alice + Freda Forever by Alexis Coe.

The book is based on a true story of two of the most infamous murderesses in United States history. Alice Mitchell and Freda Ward were lovers. Nothing could break them apart, except for jealousy and the outside forces that worked on destroying everything they had. Remember the time period and the fact that they were a lesbian couple!

Alice murdered Freda, and it was a crime story that took the nation by surprise. It captivated the whole of the United States for years afterward. Even today, it’s a story that draws people in.

Amazon Studios doesn’t want to just finance the production. It also wants to distribute worldwide. This is great news for Amazon Prime members. After a run in theaters, it will then come to Amazon Prime Video for distribution. The question for many is whether this will get a two-week window in theaters before being immediately available to stream (like plans for The Report and The Aeronauts) or fans will have to wait for three months (like for Late Night and Brittany Runs a Marathon).
