The Wheel of Time lands Criminal Minds star Daniel Henney: Who’s he playing?

Daniel Henney is best known for his role in Criminal Minds and its spin-off Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders. He’s stepping into Amazon’s The Wheel of Time.

You know Daniel Henney as Matt Simmons in the Criminal Minds universe. Now it’s time to get to know him on a far more royal level. He’s just been confirmed in exciting upcoming Amazon Original, The Wheel of Time.

He’ll join Rosamund Pike and the other cast members recently announced. He’s one of just a handful of better-known names in the business, which does continue to suggest that Amazon wants to focus on the worldbuilding and the universe.

This was something it did recently with Carnival Row, where a handful of bigger names were cast but the majority of the characters were played by lesser-known (and likely lower-cost) actors. The show certainly didn’t suffer because of this. In fact, it meant more could be spent on costumes and graphics to draw us into this world immediately.

As for The Wheel of Time, Henney will play al’Lan Mandragoran, also known as Lan and Lord of the Seven Towers, according to Deadline. Fans of the novel will know him as the only survivor of the royal line after Malkier’s kingdom fell. He’s the uncrowned king, but how long will that last for?

His filming for Criminal MInds isn’t going to get in the way. The CBS crime drama just recently finished filming its 15th and final season. The show was renewed for a final season before the Season 14 finale, allowing for filming to run back-to-back.

There’s still no word on when The Wheel of Time will be released on Amazon Prime Video. It usually takes a couple of years from the show being picked up to the premiere due to casting, filming, post-production, and more. We will likely see this series either later 2020 or sometime in 2021, since the show was only announced in October 2018.
