Amazon has picked up Lauren Oliver’s pilot, Panic, based on her book, to series. It comes on the heels of their decision to move into YA entertainment.

Amazon is diving into the world of young adult dramas with their recent pick up of the pilot, Panic, to series. Panic is based on the book of the same name, written by Lauren Oliver.

If you’re familiar with YA fiction, then Oliver’s name is probably familiar to you. Her Delirium trilogy is extremely popular with YA genre fans. There was a time when that series was being optioned for a television series too. The 2017 film, Before I Fall, was also based on one of Oliver’s novels.

Given how popular young adult television shows and films have become with Amazon’s main competitor, Netflix, it’s not surprising that they would want to cash in on the action. Teen dramas fizzled out for a few years but have largely come back into fashion lately on the heels of shows like Riverdale and 13 Reasons Why.

More from Amazon Originals

Panic is a fictional thriller about two graduating high school seniors named Heather and Dodge who decide to compete in a high-stakes tradition, the game of Panic. The novel alternates point-of-view between both characters. It’s unclear how they will choose to portray that on the series.

One refreshing aspect of Panic is that it isn’t set in a dystopian setting. It’s about average teenagers playing a terrifying game and forcing them to confront their fears to mature and prepare for the next phase of their lives. The game of Panic is a rite of passage for this group of teens, and it will challenge them in more ways than one.

Even better news for book fans, Oliver wrote the pilot for the series and will serve as an executive producer. Per Deadline, Oliver had this to say about her new involvement with Amazon:

"“I am excited that Amazon is broadening its scope to include stories of emergent adulthood, and grateful that Panic will be among their first generation,” said Oliver. “This has already been my favorite kind of project: long, thrilling, challenging, and immensely transformative. And we haven’t even started pre-production!”"

Joe Roth & Jeff Kirschenbaum of Roth Kirschenbaum Films (Maleficent 2) and Adam Schroeder will join Lauren as producers in addition to Alyssa Altman and Leigh Janiak.
