Just after premiering at Sundance, Mindy Kaling’s Late Night sold to Amazon. And being sold isn’t just the exciting news. Amazon bought it for an unprecedented amount.

Amazon just got one movie better. Mindy Kaling’s Late Night was officially acquired by the internet company, selling for an unprecedented amount. What will this mean for the future?

Late Night is based on Kaling’s own experiences while working on The Office. She was the only female writer of color but has certainly gone onto have an impressive career. And she’s not done it alone.

The movie focuses on women helping each other instead of feeling the need to compete against each other. During Late Night, Kaling’s character gets a job on Tonight with Katherine Newbury, a late-night talk show on a major network struggling with a “dinosaur” talk-show host (played by Emma Thompson). As Kaling is mentored by the host, she also offers her own support and knowledge in the world of social media.

Writing rooms have certainly advanced since The Office‘s days. While Kaling was the only female writer then, she says that she wouldn’t likely be the case now, according to an interview with Deadline.

Amazon was among five serious bidders for the movie and offered the unprecedented amount of $13m. This is up from the $12m deal for The Big Sick, which can now be streamed on Amazon Prime Video. While worldwide, there have been bigger sales, reaching $17.5m, the $13m is the largest in a U.S.-only deal.

This will likely mean that Amazon isn’t bringing the movie to Prime Video worldwide unless it can secure the worldwide rights. The Big Sick‘s deal was for U.S. and some other territories, noting just how serious the company was about acquiring the movie.
