The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel delivered an excellent second season, except on one point: Dr. Benjamin. He’s a much better man for our Midge.

There’s no denying that Midge makes some of the worst decisions and she can be completely selfish and self-obsessed. She doesn’t think she is, which shows her as more ambitious than an evil person, but that doesn’t stop me from being somewhat disappointed in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

For the whole of the second season, we got pushed this idea of Midge potentially moving on. She chose Benjamin, a doctor who is far better for her than Joel.

But this isn’t about Midge’s choice in being with her ex-husband in the end. It’s about why Benjamin is better for Midge than Joel. Here are my top reasons.

1. He could support Midge

The most important reason he was good was his support for Midge. While Joel through a hissy fit — making it clear it was him or comedy — Benjamin listened and laughed. You may notice that Midge never made a Joel joke after Joel made his issues clear, but he never gave her a chance. I get the feeling that Benjamin would have given her a chance had she made a joke he didn’t like.

2. He wanted her to succeed

At no point did Benjamin try to stop Midge from doing what she liked. I actually get the feeling that if she’d told him about the six-month tour, he would have been completely onboard with it. Yes, there would have been some questions about their wedding, but he would have supported her. He wanted her to succeed, knowing that she was amazing at what she did.

3. He stepped back when needed

Remember Midge in the park when Benjamin surprised her? He listened to her worries and took a step back. Of course, he’d already met Ethan at this point, but he did respect her wishes. However, at the same time, he made it clear that he was serious about her. It was sweet, respectful, and honest.

4. He was respectful of her family

While asking someone to marry them on a whim or because they want to is romantic, Joel was never respectful of Midge’s family. That’s where Benjamin is perfect. Sure, he was a little opportunistic in the park, he still knew that it was better to have Abe’s approval. He took everything seriously when Abe ran through what he wanted and expectations.

Benjamin was the better man and I wish that we actually got to see the breakup. Instead, it sounds like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3 won’t even give us that except through flashbacks and I think Benjamin deserves more than that.

Was the ending of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 2 out of character for Midge?. dark. Next
