After the success at the telethon, it was only natural to think that Midge’s career was finally on the up. Never expect it all to turn out right on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 2 finale reminded us not to take anything for granted. While Midge was successful at the telethon (my favorite episode of the season, with the Catskills and Abe learning the truth a close second), not everything works out the way she’d like it. When she’s kicked off the stage one night, she thinks it may all be over.

And why is she kicked off the stage? For talking about pregnancy. Yes, pregnancy. It’s apparently not funny and not something people want to hear her talk about. You know, people don’t like hearing about the lady things.

Well, the people of the 50s will be shocked to hear what women are talking about now. Oh, how I’d wish to see one of the club owners end up in the present day for a bit. But I digress.

After getting booted from the stage, Midge heads out for a drink and runs into Lenny. He’s having a hard night too, after finding out another state is out for his arrest. It’s a hard life being a comic, but Lenny does have a TV gig, where he gets to offend as much as he wants.

Midge promises to be there for him and I love that we have this platonic, business relationship. They’re just two comics who look out for each other.

Benjamin wants to marry Midge

Following on from meeting Ethan accidentally at the park and asking Midge if she would be happy him meeting her kids if they were engaged, Dr. Benjamin decides to ask Abe for his permission. Armed with a reading list and financials, Ben is a nervous wreck and Abe isn’t making it easy. Eventually, he says yes, but it takes a while to get there.

I don’t think it’s going to matter that Abe said yes. In fact, Midge was like a deer caught in headlights when Abe said he’d give Ben permission. Of course, that was linked to something else, but Ben is definitely out.

That’s probably a good thing because Joel is as jealous as hell. He hates that Benjamin met Ethan. Yes, it was an accident but Joel isn’t listening to reason. As much as Joel has grown over the last 10 episodes, he’s still a jealous, misogynistic idiot at times.

I get his point about this being a conversation but he needs to actually listen to Midge. He knows what Rose is like.

Abe has a breakdown

Speaking of Rose, she finds out that Abe wants to quit his job. Well, he’s not getting much of a choice about the Bell Labs. Now that the project is done and Midge doesn’t know how to keep her mouth shut, Abe is out.

He could go back to teaching and take a paid sabbatical but that’s not something he’s interested in. After being fired from Bell Labs, he realizes that he’s lost his way. He used to want to fight against people like Bell Labs and now he’s one of them.

We catch Abe at the end meeting up with the son of a friend. Abe is in need of a good lawyer because of the trouble he’s going to get into. This is going to be an interesting third season for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Susie gets a request

Meanwhile, Susie is summoned to Sophie Lennon’s place. After standing up to Sophie, Susie naturally things of the worse. It turns out Sophie wants to hire Susie as her manager.

Sophie didn’t want to be a comic. She wanted to be a professional actress on Broadway but that never happened. Susie has passion and drive and may be able to get Sophie the gigs she wants.

Of course, Susie doesn’t tell Midge about it. When she wants to, Midge has news of her own. Shy saw her telethon performance and wants Midge to open for him. It’s six months on tour but Midge jumps at the chance. That’s why Midge is the deer in headlights, as she realized she didn’t even think of Ben before agreeing to the tour.

Susie feels like she’s betraying Midge by becoming Sophie’s manager, too, so decides not to say anything. Yep, that’s going to come out in the third season and when it does, it’s going to be hilarious.

To end it all off, Midge decides to see Joel. Not only does she want to tell him about the gig, but she’s realized that she’s probably going to be all alone. She at least wants one night with someone who loves her.

Overall, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 2 was strong. There were some nostalgic moments with the Catskills and beautiful character developing moments in Paris. I wish we could get more development of the Weissmans. Maybe the third season is the charm for them.

Now there are plenty of questions for the third season. You can bet your bottom dollar I’ll put a list of questions together and share them.
