The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel: Were Midge’s actions in the finale out of character?
In The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 2 finale, Midge chose to be with Joel. Were her actions in the final moments out of character for her?
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 2 is out and done. After watching all 10 episodes, we’ve been on the ups and downs of her career so far. It all ended on a high in a way, with her getting ready to go on tour with Shy.
But her actions at the end seemed out of character. At the very end, Midge decided she wanted to spend a night with Joel, cheating on Benjamin. Well, at least, it was cheating in a way. We never saw the two break up but it’s clear from Midge’s reaction to her dad giving Benjamin permission that the relationship is over.

And yes, in a way, Midge’s actions were out of character. Knowing what it feels like to be cheated on, she wouldn’t cheat on someone else.
Yet, at the same time, her actions weren’t out of character. Since embarking on a comedy career, Midge had become a selfish person. She completely forgot about her friend’s baby shower (the baby shower she threw!) and routinely overlooked how her actions would affect others.

Just look at Yom Kippur dinner: she spent ages trying to tell people she was embarking on a comedy career without thinking of how hungry the others were after their fast. She could have said something while they were eating.
Let’s not forget that she said yes to the six-month tour without even thinking of logistics. What about her job at the makeup counter? What about her children? What about her family? At no point did she consider any of it, making her a selfish person. So is it really that surprising that she decided to follow her heart back to Joel?
And she is following her heart. It’s not like Midge really truly moved on. There have been hints throughout The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 2 that Midge would go back to Joel if he’d take her. She loves him and never wanted to leave him in the first place. When she wanted to get back with him officially, he was the one that couldn’t deal with being the butt of her jokes.
I don’t think choosing Joel was out of character for her. The whole season had been leading to this. I just wish we’d have more of Benjamin because he was the better man for her.
