When Amazon released the Sept. 2018 list of shows and movies available, King Lear didn’t have a set date. Now it does. So, when will King Lear drop on Amazon Prime Video?
Amazon released the list of shows and movies available on its Prime Video service in September last week. While there were five Prime Original titles added, one of those didn’t get a date. King Lear was just set to come out sometime in September. The series now has a date of release, so when will King Lear stream on Amazon Prime Video?
We’ll have to wait until the end of the month for the Prime Original movie. It’s released on Sept. 28, 2018. Starring Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson, and Jim Broadbent, the movie is a contemporary retelling of the Shakespeare masterpiece.

If you loved the way Leonard DiCaprio’s Romeo & Juliet was done, then you’ll love this adaptation. It keeps the original wording from the 16th-century play but with a modern day setting.
Anthony Hopkins plays the aging King Lear, who decides to split his kingdom between his three daughters based on how much he loves them (and they love him). Cordelia refuses to flatter her father and is banished, causing the whole family to spiral into despair.

Hopkins, Thompson, and Broadbent make up just a small part of the high profile cast. Outlander fans will recognize Tobias Menzies as the Duke of Cornwall. Those who loved the recent adaptation of Little Women will recognize Emily Watson. It’s hard to miss Marcella‘s Florence Pugh, who has a resume full of Shakespeare and period pieces and will play Elizabeth de Burgh (wife of Robert the Bruce) in Outlaw King.
This is certainly going to be one of the Amazon Original movies that you’ll want to watch. The trailer certainly brings out the meshing of old and new.
