5 best Amazon movies for the weekend
The Proposal (2009)
The romantic comedy The Proposal teams up the dynamic duo of Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds in a hilarious film, and it is the first of the Amazon movies to check out this weekend. Directed by Anne Fletcher (27 Dresses), this film received mixed reviews but much praise for the chemistry between Bullock and Reynolds.
Reynolds plays Andrew Paxton, assistant to Bullock’s Margaret Tate, an editor in chief at a book publishing company is hated by everyone she works with. She abuses Andrew, who dutifully sees to her every need. When she is notified that her work visa is about to expire and she basically blackmails Andrews into marrying her so she can avoid being deported.
The film also stars Malin Åkerman, Craig T. Nelson, Mary Steenburgen, Betty White, Oscar Nunez, and Aasif Mandvi.
It is a fantastic romantic comedy that keeps you laughing throughout.
Book of Love (2022)
The Amazon original Book of Love is an excellent romantic comedy starring Sam Clafin and Verónica Echegui.
Clafin is an uptight English author whose debut novel “The Sensible Heart” hasn’t done well in the US but has become a hit in Mexico. He travels to that country for a book tour and discovers why his novel is the number one book there. His translater for the tour, played by Echegui, also translated the book to Spanish, with some changes. She took his bland book and gave it some spice. She turned his novel into a steamy romance with a cover to match.
It is a delightful escape and highly entertaining.
You Again
The comedy movie, You Again has an amazing cast, including Kristen Bell, Jamie Lee Curtis, Sigourney Weaver, Odette Yustman, Kristin Chenoweth, Victor Garber, and Betty White.
When Marni Olsen (Bell) returns home for her brother’s wedding, she discovers he is marrying her former high school bully JJ (Yustman). Marni has become a success since leaving her hometown but feels like the acne-riddled high schooler when confronted with her past. She tries to reveal JJ’s true colors, but her plans backfire, and she makes things worse.
The story becomes more complex when it is discovered that the groom’s mother and aunt of the bride were also high school friends whose friendship ended badly.
Check this one out, as it tells a somewhat familiar story but in a very charming way.
Spaceballs (1987)
Funnyman Mel Brooks co-wrote, produced, and directed the space opera comedy Spaceballs. This movie parodies the Star Wars franchise but also includes many other sci-fi movies like Star Trek, Alien, Wizard of Oz, 2001, and Planet of the Apes.
Lone Starr and his trusty sidekick Barf rescue Princess Vespa and her droid, so they aren’t captured by the Spaceball President Skroob. The Spaceballs seek out fresh air, as they have ruined all of the air on their planet. They want to use Vespa as a hostage as her planet, Druidia has plenty of fresh air. Starr learns about the power known as “the Schwartz” so he can defeat Skroob and his commanders, Dark Helmet and Colonel Sandurz.
The movie stars Bill Pullman, John Candy and Rick Moranis, Daphne Zuniga, Dick Van Patten, George Wyner, Lorene Yarnell, and the voice of Joan Rivers. Dom DeLuise and Rudy De Luca make cameo appearances. Brooks also portrays two characters in this movie.
This film didn’t do well with the critics but has since become a cult classic.
A Long Way Down (2014)
The black comedy A Long Way Down was loosely based on Nick Hornby’s novel of the same title. This one is leaving Amazon on April 4, so watch it soon.
Starring Pierce Brosnan, Toni Collette, Imogen Poots, Aaron Paul, Rosamund Pike, Josef Altin, and Sam Neill, follows a group of people who have all decided to commit suicide from the same rooftop on New Year’s Eve. They decided to hold off at least until Valentine’s day. They take a trip away from London to avoid some unwanted media attention from a scheme one of them as set up.
If dark comedy is your thing, give this one a try.
