What makes Utopia so great? Part of it definitely involves the excellent graphics, including the use of the graphic novel to tell the story. We get this look at the world the creator has drawn, the story that everyone has followed.
And this graphic novel has a cult following, which is very meta considering the series is likely to have the same. It’s a series that brings the real world to life with the touch on conventions and the idea that a graphic novel can predict the future.
At the heart of it, it is a character-driven storyline. We constantly follow Jessica and her search for her father. All she wants is to find him, find home, and kill Mr. Rabbit. It takes us on a wild journey, as we watch her grow as a person. She learns more about friendship and life from the people who join her on this journey.
You have to think about the real world
September 2020 could have been bad timing for the series. After all, there was a huge focus on a flu that was killing children. Nobody could figure out how it was being spread, and there was a lot of focus on a vaccine/cure for the flu. It felt extremely real for the current pandemic.
However, the series took things a step further. Everything was orchestrated for a bigger plan. After all, there was the big question of “what have you done today to earn your place in this crowded world?”
The series certainly touched a lot on the global population and the way it will grow up until 2050. Will we even survive that long with the fight for resources? The planet doesn’t need us, after all. It’s an extremely important series that will bring up plenty of discussions that we don’t necessarily want to have but need to have.
