Amazon acquires untitled Daniel Dae Kim and Randall Park heist movie
Daniel Dae Kim and Randall Park’s heist movie is heading to Amazon
Amazon has been front and center in movie bidding wars in recent years. It isn’t all that surprising to hear its at it again. This time, Amazon has acquired the rights to an untitled Asian-American heist movie from Daniel Dae Kim and Randall Park.
Barely anything is known about this movie. Deadline reports that it will be about two high school friends who reunite years later. Their reunion brings some nods to the classic heist films. Think of the likes of Ocean’s 11 and The Italian Job. At the same time, there are going to be nods to The Full Monty and Better Luck Tomorrow.
More focus on Asian-American movies

Recent years have brought a focus to well-made Asian-American movies. Crazy Rich Asians certainly set the benchmark for that, and now we’re getting many more. The Farewell and To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before are just two that stand out. Of course, Mulan is also coming to Disney Plus in a couple of weeks.
And we can’t forget that Kim and Park have Always Be My Maybe, which came to Netflix last year. This latest untitled project is very different to that, though.
Like the movies mentioned, the idea is to hire mostly Asian American actors. A few years ago, that might have made it harder to get the movie on a major streamer or with a big studio. However, times are changing as there’s more focus on finally bringing diversity to the screens.
There are a lot of things to be excited about.
When will the movie head to Amazon?
There are no timeframes just yet. The project doesn’t even have a title right now!
As filming starts to open up around the world, there hopefully won’t be too much of a delay once the movie gets to that point. Right now, the focus will be on the pre-production work, including the writing.
We’ll bring you more news once we have it.
