What is Penny Dreadful: City of Angels about?
If you’re expecting a campy horror like the original series, look again. The trailer made it pretty clear that Penny Dreadful: City of Angels wouldn’t have a similar theme. It’s not set in Victorian London and it doesn’t include any of the monsters known as Penny Dreadfuls.
Instead, the show is set in pre-World War II L.A. Race wars are problematic, especially with the Third Reich looking to gain power. When Tiago Vega joins the L.A. police as a detective, he can’t really celebrate. As a Mexican, it’s like he’s betraying his people, and he’s not fully accepted into the police force.
There’s also the issue of a major freeway being planned straight through the middle of the Mexican-American community. It’s clear that the city of L.A. is looking to build “walls,” but will the city get its own way?
While all that is going on, there’s a story of two godly sisters who are at war with each other. What exactly is going on there?
