Will SHOWTIME give Penny Dreadful: City of Angels a second season?

We’ve come to the end of Penny Dreadful: City of Angels Season 1. Now eyes are on the potential future of the show.

Could SHOWTIME renew the series? Is there enough interest to justify another season of the show?

It’s hard to say which way SHOWTIME will go. I’m certainly up for another season, although it’s hard to say which direct it will go in. It’s not like there aren’t plenty of horrors of the past that can be focused on, other mythologies to delve into.

However, this always felt like it would be one season and that’s it. From the beginning, it reminded me of The Terror: Infamy, which was certainly a one-season story. That doesn’t mean I don’t want more, but I’m curious if there were ever plans for more.

Which way will SHOWTIME go?

The problem is SHOWTIME is unpredictable. While we can certainly look at TV Series Finale for the ratings for Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, they don’t mean much. These live ratings are used by broadcast networks for the advertisers. SHOWTIME relies on subscribers as a premium cable network.

Plus, a lot of people watch through the SHOWTIME App. Those views aren’t counted by Nielsen, making them unreliable.

And the shows that have done well in the past have been abruptly canceled. Yet shows that perform on a lower level in terms of the live ratings have been renewed. SHOWTIME is simply unpredictable.

That being said, a show like this is needed. It’s time we look at the dark sides of history and be honest about the systemic racism against anyone who isn’t a white American. Even anyone who isn’t white in general! Penny Dreadful: City of Angels wasn’t afraid to delve into the honesty of the past.
