What happened in the Absentia Season 3 premiere on Amazon Prime Video?

The wait is paying off. Absentia Season 3 is now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video. It’s time to see what the next case is for Emily Byrne to solve.

If you were expecting something lighter than previous years, the Absentia Season 3 premiere quickly makes it clear that isn’t going to happen. There’s darkness and grittiness, and not just the fact that so many people are mourning the loss of Alice.

So, let’s get into the breakdown of the premiere. Who can we trust and what’s a red herring?

Emily doesn’t trust the new swim coach

I guess when you’ve been through trauma, trusting anyone is going to feel impossible. When Emily learns that there’s a new swim coach at the school, she immediately starts checking up on him. She just can’t help it.

While looking through photos, she finds out that he’s former military. So, she decides to break into his apartment and do some snooping, but Mr. Rizzo is there. He doesn’t spot her as he’s on the phone to his mom, arranging a dinner so his mom can meet his new girlfriend. Emily decides to leave this for now and rushes back out.

Was this a red herring or will he come up again in a later episode?

The new case of the season

Meanwhile, Nick is investigating a new case. It’s involving bodies being found with missing organs and Nick may have a lead.

It looks like he does, but when the lead tells him the situation is going down with just hours to get ready, Nick has no choice but to take Emily on the mission—they’re trying their hardest to make things work for Flynn and things are but there’s not quite the connection. Also, it’s hard when Flynn misses Alice so much.

Emily going with Nick as backup threatens to destroy the whole case. He needs to avoid bringing her in while she’s on suspension. And it doesn’t help that she’s spying on Gunnarsen, who has been exonerated for killing Alice. Gunnarsen knows, and she’s not all too pleased about it and could hinder Emily from coming back.

Of course, Emily isn’t even sure she wants to be back with the FBI. There’s a lot of water under the bridge there.

That doesn’t matter. At the end of the episode, Nick calls Emily to say that his source has been spooked. While on the phone, he’s attacked by masked men. Emily calls for help but heads back to her house alone. It’s a good thing she called for help, though. At least people know to go to the house!

While there, Emily is attacked by a masked man. She puts up a good fight and does manage to get a glimpse of the man’s clouded eye through the ski mask. However, the man gets the upper hand and stabs Emily in the side and then rushes off, leaving her to bleed out.

Can Emily be saved? Well, of course! It wouldn’t be Absentia without Stana Katic!
