Capture the flag
The man focus of the episode is Hanna fitting in with the other girls. It all starts with a game of capture the flag, which sees the girls split up in teams of four. The idea is that they work together, but of course, Hanna isn’t used to working with others. Nor does she need to.

Hanna quickly proves that training in the wild is better than training at The Meadows. She’s had the chance to fight against real opponents and knows the forest like it’s the back of her hands. Even without the full freedom, Hanna knows when to stay silent, trusts her instincts, and proves that she is the best out of all the girls. It isn’t surprising that she’s the one to win.
During the game, Hanna does see a man on the outside of The Meadows’s fence. This man was with Marissa, and he wants to help get Hanna out and to freedom.
Sandy loses her “sister”
Each of the girls is connecting to their new families in different ways. Sandy is fully believing that the family made up for her is real. She’s bonded with these fictitious people, wanting to believe that everything is real.
And so, that leads to her worrying when she finds out her sister needs surgery. Jules, Clara, and Hanna stay with her until she finds out if her sister has made it through. It’s bad news.
Hanna can’t connect with them, trying to remind them that none of this is real. But it’s real to Sandy. And she needs to grieve.
Hanna finds a way to help Sandy grieve. She takes Sandy and the other girls out to a tree where there’s a small mound. It’s a chance to lay the fake sister to rest. This is also important bonding for the girls, giving Hanna a chance to feel like she’s found a place; found her own family.
After all, Hanna is still struggling with the loss of her father. Erik may not have been her biological father, but he was enough of one to make her sad that he’s gone. He was the only family she knew. But that changes as Clara hugs her and she feels like she’s finding a place with the other girls.
Marissa escapes from lockup
Meanwhile, Marissa is being interrogated by John Carmichael. He wants to know how long Marissa has been working against them and what her plan is. Of course, she’s not willing to talk.
She does have a plan, though. When she finds out she’s being transported elsewhere, she convinces a guard to bring her water. That gives her the chance to escape, where she gets to Terri’s office while Terri is talking to Hanna as “mom.”
Hanna is opening up about how lonely she feels. Marissa decides to make a video call, but Hanna makes it clear that she’s staying. Marissa figures out which room Hanna is in and then heads that way, getting Hanna out. Of course, Clara follows to bring Hanna back.
In the forest, Hanna shoots Marissa in the arm. The guards capture Marissa once more, while Hanna shows that she’s joining Utrax. She doesn’t want to run anymore.
