The Great is a new miniseries heading to Hulu in May 2020. However, Canadians viewers will get it on Prime, and the first trailer is out.

The Great is coming to Hulu next month. So, if you’re wondering why Amazon Prime Video released the trailer for the satirical comedy, I get it. It turns out Amazon Prime Video Canada has the streaming rights north of the border.

It’s extremely clear from the trailer that this is not meant to be a serious show. The Great miniseries is a satirical comedy, focusing on the early life of Russia’s Catherine the Great. If you want something series, you’ll want to watch the HBO miniseries instead.

You also won’t want to go into this series expecting historical accuracy. It’s described as being anti-historical and gender-bending. The idea is that it’s just for fun with a name that you’ll recognize.

The trailer gives me vibes of The Romanoffs, which is fitting considering the Romanov family was part of a Russian dynasty. The music feels similar, the satirical nature feels similar, and the overall essence of the show feels similar.

However, there is a huge difference. Instead of weekly releases, The Great‘s 10 episodes will drop all at once. While the show comes to Hulu on May 15, Amazon Prime Video Canada will get the full season on May 16. This will simply be part of the streaming rights, and it’s much better than having to look all over the place in the hope that somewhere has the series.

Elle Fanning plays the queen that goes from Catherine the Nothing to Catherine the Great. Nicholas Hoult plays Peter III of Russia, with Phoebe Fox, Louis Hynes, and Belinda Bromilow also starring. Get ready for a fun ride.

Something to note is that this is billed as a miniseries. There are no plans to bring a second season at this time.
