Due to the novel coronavirus shutting down theaters, Universal is releasing The Invisible Man, The Hunt and more on Digital early. Here are all the details.

With theaters shutting down and some movie dates being pushed to later in the year/next year, movie studios are looking at ways to avoid too much of a financial hit. Universal Pictures has opted to release its movies on Digital. The Invisible ManThe Hunt and more are coming to Amazon Video early.

This move includes the specialty label Focus Features, which is owned by Universal’s parent company, Comcast. That means The Invisible ManThe Hunt, and Emma will all be available to buy on Digital from tomorrow. However, there is a catch. You’re not going to be able to buy once and that’s it. The movies will be available to rent, so you have 48 hours to watch them and that’s it. If you want to see them again, you’ll have to buy again.

More from Movies on Amazon

It’s a smart move on Universal’s part. Offering it to rent is just like people going to the theaters to see it. However, instead of couples or families buying tickets that would end up costing $40, they’re going to spend $20 on renting the movie. They watch it once, as the would in the theaters, and then they can buy again if they want to see it.

The ability to purchase to own it will likely only be available in the standard 90 days. However, this isn’t something that CNN reports. It’s more of a gut feeling to make as much money as possible.

Trolls: World Tour will still be released in theaters on Apr. 10, even if the theaters aren’t open. The movie will be released on Amazon Video and other VOD platforms to rent at the same time, making it possible for all families to see it.

However, there are still some movies that will be pushed. Fast & Furious 9 is not going to be released until sometime next year. It’s one of Universal’s biggest movies and the studio isn’t going to want to take a huge hit, so it makes more sense to hold off.

This could change the way studios do things in the future. We could see more movies released in theaters and to rent on VOD at the same time, making it possible for more to see movies right away.
