January 2020 has been a rough year for horror fans with both major releases — The Grudge and The Turning — getting panned by audiences and critics. Many are hopeful that Gretel and Hansel may turn things around.
Currently, the film is earning okay reviews on sites like Rotten Tomatoes. Critics are saying the movie prefers to create an atmosphere and build suspense rather than shock audience goers. There is also some criticism over the movie’s slow pacing. However, it is faring much better than the aforementioned horror films released this month.

The film is based on the classic German folktale by the Brothers Grimm. It’s a dark fantasy film that follows two siblings, Hansel and Gretel, who wander through the woods, only to stumble upon the home of a witch. IT star Sophia Lillis leads the cast as Gretel and she is joined by Sam Leakey, Charles Babalola, Jessica De Gouw, and Alice Krige.
For those who are interested in purchasing Gretel and Hansel on Amazon Video, DVD, or Blu-ray, you won’t have to wait that long to get your hands on the film. Previous Orion Pictures releases, The Prodigy and Child’s Play, only took about three months to move from theaters to home video.
We can anticipate Gretel and Hansel becoming available by the end of April with the Amazon Video release arriving exactly two weeks before the physical copies.
