Britain’s BBC is teaming up with Amazon Prime once more to bring a new dramedy, called The Offenders. Here’s what we know so far.

Britain and the U.S. are teaming up again to bring great entertainment. In this case, it’s Amazon Prime and BBC joining together again, bringing The Offenders (a working title) to viewers.

Deadline reported the news, sharing that The Office‘s Stephen Merchant and Mayan MC‘s Elgin James will team up for the production. Big Talk and Four Eyes are the two production companies behind the series that is described as a “crime thriller-meets-state-of-the-nation commentary.”

There are a few small details about the series, which will be told over the course of six episodes. All episodes will be an hour-long, following a traditional format in the UK and something that subscription services are starting to see the value in.

The Offenders will follow seven strangers from different walks of life. They are all sentenced to community service in Bristol, and they become unlikely allies as their private lives become complicated and their lives intertwine. One of their own will become involved in Bristol’s most dangerous gang, leading to the other six to protect this one.

The series will clearly bring a mixture of lightness and darkness, especially with Merchant and James working on the production together. They both also bring personal experience, as Merchant’s parents worked within the community service sphere, and James has a background in the gang life.

Merchant isn’t just the man behind the creation of the series. he’s also going to direct and co-star. Filming will take place in Bristol, but there are no actors attached to the production just yet.

Amazon Prime in U.S., Canada, and Australia will air all six episodes. In the UK, the show will air on BBC One and then go to iPlayer. All other locations will depend on licensing deals made with BBC.

This isn’t the first time BBC and Amazon have teamed up. A most recent success has been with Fleabag, which won Best Television Series — Comedy or Musical at the Golden Globes 2020, among other wins.
