You may know Regina Hall from hilarious films like Little and Girls Trip but the actress will take a darker turn in new Amazon Original, Master.

Regina Hall is putting her comedy career on pause to tackle an exciting and creepy new drama series from Amazon Studios. Deadline exclusively reports that the Girls Trip star will be an executive producer on the upcoming occult series, titled Master.

Hall will play Gail Bishop, a black master, i.e. the head of students, at a liberal arts college called Ancaster. Bishop is also described as being queer, which is exciting. It’s always nice to see upcoming series are planning on being more inclusive, especially within the supernatural genre.

Master will focus on Hall’s character and another African-American female character who is a freshman at Ancaster. The series is set to follow the two women as they begin to experience strange hauntings that may be tied to the school’s historical founding.

More from Amazon Originals

Ancaster is described as being a “predominantly white college,” so it appears that Master is going to be timely, topical, and tackle various social justice issues. As for who will be in control creatively behind-the-scenes, the Deadline article states that Miriam Diallo will serve as both writer and director on the upcoming Amazon Original. Amazon appears to be taking a weighted interest in expanding its horror series as it still has another upcoming anthology by Lena Waithe in the works titled Them.

Master will begin production sometime next year, which means we likely will not see it debut on Amazon until the tail end of 2020 at the earliest, potentially sooner depending on the exact start date. At the moment, it doesn’t appear that anyone else has been cast but keep your eyes peeled to Amazon Adviser for future updates on the project!
