Amazon hopes you’ll fall in love with its new high-profile anthology series
By Mads Lennon
Based on the New York Times column of the same name, Amazon’s upcoming original anthology series, Modern Love, takes aim at the heart.
Not unlike a spurned lover taking another chance at romance, Amazon is trying its hand at high-profile anthologies after its previous fling, The Romanoffs, fizzled out. Modern Love takes a look at, well, love.
Watching the brand-new trailer for this upcoming series, I couldn’t help but compare it somewhat unfavorably to the annual smorgasbord movie that compacts a bunch of big-name actors into multiple mini-heartwarming stories stretched across a special holiday, see: Valentine’s Day, New Year’s Eve, Mother’s Day, Dog Days, etc.
That said, Amazon does tend to place more care into the creation of its originals than those prepackaged films. My commentary makes me sound cynical. I’m not. I enjoy those movies sometimes, even. But I had high hopes for The Romanoffs, and a majority of the episodes were incredibly underwhelming.

However, Modern Love does look compelling and certainly worth checking out. Tina Fey and John Slattery play a married couple who have reached a lull in their marriage. Anne Hathaway seems brilliant as always. Dev Patel, Catherine Keener, Julia Garner, and more all pop up in the brief but illuminating trailer.
It’s pretty clear what type of show this will be based on the preview. What I think will make or break it will be the writing. The cast is clearly up to snuff and a veritable who’s who of big names. Unless people start phoning it in (and based on the trailer that doesn’t appear the case), we know we’re going to get stellar performances.
The trailer doesn’t tell us much about what kind of stories will be presented, or if the scripts will be smart or too sappy, it’s more a roulette of familiar faces to enchant the audience to give it a chance. And we do know the story is based on the real New York Times column. That’s all it needs to be at this point, and I will check it out because of the cast.
