Lore has been canceled by Amazon after two seasons.Just why was this Amazon Original canceled? Here are my thoughts on the possible reasons.

After two seasons, we’re saying goodbye to Lore. Well, sort of. The two seasons will still be available to stream, but Amazon hasn’t renewed it for a third season. Of course, you can still listen to the podcast.

There are many debates now over why the series was canceled. It all usually comes down to money. Were there enough fresh subscribers and viewers of the series to make up for the budget of the series. After all, this show would have had a huge budget.

As an anthology series, each storyline was different. Costumes couldn’t be reused, and making costumes for different periods is extremely costly. Then there are some of the graphics for the CGI and cartoon-like elements. And don’t forget the multiple actors needed for the individual series.

On top of that, the format for the second season changed considerably from the first. Lore was based on the podcast of the same name, and it initially drew in the fans of Aaron Mahnke’s podcast. From there, it would have gained other fans, but in the end, it needed to get the podcast fans’ approval. The first season did that.

It was fresh and different. While Mahnke’s narration did divide opinion for all sorts of reasons, sometimes I felt the lack of it disappointing in the second season. But I could overlook it because some of the ways the narration was done were intriguing. I loved the Burke and Hare episode immensely and while it didn’t feel like Lore, the Jack Parsons episode was beautifully created.

There were many complaints that Lore Season 2 was more like every other horror series on TV right now. It didn’t have the fresh appeal the first season did. And I think that may be where things fell. If people weren’t going to watch the full season, Amazon knew that there was a risk the payoff for a third wouldn’t be enough.

If I’m honest, the cancellation news didn’t surprise me all that much. Amazon tends to renew shows a month or two after arrival (with many even getting renewed ahead of debuts). The fact that Lore was released in October 2018 and then we heard nothing until now was a hint to me that it had been quietly canceled.

Whatever the reason, we have two excellent seasons of Lore on Amazon and I urge fans of the series to check out the podcast if you haven’t already.
