Carnival Row is the highly anticipated Amazon Original coming in August. The show gave us a deeper look at the two main characters at SDCC 2019.

If you’re excited about Carnival Row, you’re certainly not alone. We know very little about the series so far, but that’s not stopped the hype. SDCC gave us a look at the two main characters, their storylines bringing them to where they are in the premiere episode.

Orlando Bloom plays Rycroft Philostrate. He’s a human detective, who once fell in love with a faery during a war with her home. However, he had to leave her behind. As the mythical creatures make his home their safe space, he has the chance to see her again. The problem is love between humans and the creatures is forbidden, as humans are now intolerant of the creatures they caused to find a new home.

Philostrate is on a mission to give the voiceless a voice. He’s tolerant and kind, wanting to make sure that the people who murder and maim the creatures is brought to justice. Naturally, that’s going to cause a few problems.

The season starts with a murder investigation. That investigation is only going to grow, with animosity, threats, and danger. He’ll stop at nothing to get to the truth, but could that mean problems for his love of a faery.

As for that faery, Vignette Stonemoss (Cara Delevingne) is now living in Carnival Row, a refugee forced to flee her attacked home. She still loves the man that gave her his heart, but everything is stacked against them, including a secret that she holds deep within that could threaten Philo’s most important case to date.

Vignette will fight for what’s right. She’ll protect those weaker than her, and it looks like she’s hiding who she really is just to fit in when out in the open. Could this be the problem that threatens all?

We still know very little about Carnival Row. This Victorian-set fantasy promises to bring something big and exciting. If you love the likes of Game of Thrones, Merlin, and Once Upon a Time, this is going to be a series to look out for.
