Homecoming taps Janelle Monáe as star of Season 2
Homecoming Season 2 won’t star Julia Roberts. Janelle Monáe has been tapped as the season lead instead, and here are all the details.
When Homecoming was picked up for a second season, we knew that it wouldn’t be with Julia Roberts back in the lead. The Amazon Original now has its lead in Janelle Monáe, and here are all the details for the season.
Fans will know Monáe from big roles in Hidden Figures and Moonlight, making her an exciting addition to Homecoming. So far, we know very little about the role, except that she is a woman who has no memory of how she’s ended up in a canoe floating on a river. Not only that, but she doesn’t even know who she is.

This is a twist on the plot from the first season, which was based on the popular Gimlet Media podcast. Roberts’ character had forgotten the real reason she left the Homecoming facility. As memories start coming back, she realizes why she’s been telling the story she has been for the last four years.
This second season won’t be based on the podcast. It’s a new storyline that will bring on a life of its own. This will be worrying for some. We’ve seen shows move past the original source material before, such as Game of Thrones, The Handmaid’s Tale, and The Man in the High Castle. The second season can be difficult, as the show writers try to figure out the direction to take.
It’s not yet clear if the second season will feature other stars from the first. All we know is that Roberts is out and Monáe is in.
Amazon Prime Video viewers may recognize Monáe. She was in an episode of Electric Dreams. She’s best known for her music, including the album Dirty Computer, which saw her nominated for two Grammy awards.
If you want to see Monáe in something else, make sure you check out Harriett, the Focus Feature biopic of Harriet Tubman. She’ll also be in the live-action reboot of Lady and the Tramp, according to Deadline.
