Should Amazon be worried about the low cost of Disney+?

Disney revealed the cost of its new Disney+ streaming service. It’s lower than Amazon Prime, but this isn’t something Amazon should be worried about.

Disney revealed a lot of information about it’s upcoming Disney+ streaming service. One of those reveals was the price, which will be set at a lower point than Amazon Prime Video, surprising many. Now the question is whether Amazon should be worried.

Coming into the streaming game so late, it shouldn’t actually be all that surprising that the price will be low. Disney will want to encourage people to sign up — although the company likely knew many Disney and Marvel fans would jump at the platform right away regardless of price. I do think over time that price will increase, as it becomes more popular. Being a lower price than Amazon Prime probably won’t last for too long.

But does Amazon have anything to worry about right now? Probably not.

Just because Disney is offering a lower price doesn’t mean fans will jump from Amazon Prime to Disney. It could mean fans take up another streaming platform but probably won’t switch. And there are a few reasons for this.

One of the biggest is that Disney’s platform doesn’t affect Prime users, unlike Netflix users. The Disney movies are available to buy on Amazon Video but they’re not part of the Prime experience. Meanwhile, Netflix is losing a large catalog of movies thanks to Disney+. If any platform was going to lose users in favor of Disney, it would likely be Netflix.

Another reason Amazon Prime won’t suffer is due to the offering. Amazon isn’t all about the TV shows and movies. Prime offers a Twitch membership, a music collection, Kindle Unlimited, and the popular two-day shipping. People sign up to Prime for all types of reasons, and Disney won’t offer them.

And then there’s the fact that Amazon Prime has been around longer. There’s more exclusive content than Disney+ will have (you can get most of the Disney content on DVD if you want) and people have Prime Originals have fans that will keep coming back for more.

Even though Disney+ is half the price of the Amazon monthly cost, there’s nothing to be concerned about right now. Amazon users won’t all suddenly jump ship because the two services are completely different.
