This Giant Beast That Is the Global Economy Season 1, Episode 8 review: Is there any hope against corruption?
The finale of This Giant Beast That Is the Global Economy focused on a point that didn’t seem to have a positive point. Is there any hope against the corruption in the world?
Just like money, corruption is a global thing. This Giant Beast That Is the Global Economy Episode 8 looked at corruption around the world. Whether it’s governments, authorities, or just individuals it was a chance to see that this is a problem everywhere.
Sure, there are laws against corruption. India has an interesting one that sees those who take part in any sort of bribe (even paying it) could face legal bother. Yet, it’s clear that a blind eye is turned. Otherwise, a lot more people would be in trouble. Corruption is the “norm” but is that right?

Kal Penn looks into this with an honest lens. I’ll admit it was the least entertaining of all episodes, getting extremely serious and ending the series on a low point. This episode could have been better somewhere in the middle. Unlike all the other episodes, this one doesn’t really have a positive ending. There’s no upside to the corruption in the world, except that, like counterfeiting, it’s just going to happen.
One thing I will say is that I learned a lot throughout the episode. I never realized about the laws in other countries. Throughout the season, there has been plenty of lessons. Most of them with some sort of humor that makes them stick.

I think this is a series where an episode will stand out for everyone for a different reason. This corruption one didn’t really mean much to me. Corruption is around and it has been forever. How else do the rich keep getting richer? We just have to look at the reasons for revolutions around the world or even literature like Robin Hood to see that corruption exists and the downside that it can have.
Meanwhile, the look at the growth and evolution of money, a look at death in various cultures, and that look at AI were all interesting episodes. It’s all about where the interests lie.
Overall, I enjoyed the series. If Amazon decided to make another season — and I hope it does — then I’d be more than willing to watch. If not another season about money, how about a season that focuses on a different part of the world? Adam Ruins Everything has managed it so This Giant Beast should be able to.
