Kal Penn hosts the documentary that is far more than just a look at the global economy within an isolated world. It’s more than just looking at the criminal activities but just how difficult it is to do. Sure, you can set up a shell corporation and there are experts (those who have been convicted of money laundering) who share the basics of money laundering, but that’s just the start.
There’s a comedic element to the series. These are dark and important topics, but Penn helps to add humor throughout. In fact, he finds the humor in the topic, such as money falling from the sky. This Giant Beast That Is the Global Economy offers entertainment within the documentary, making it stand out from all the rest out there.

While a lot of the information you’ll likely know the basics of — such as the Greek economy crash in 2013 and the bank bailout — there will be reveals that you never even considered. There are some elements of the Greek financial crisis that were never widely reported unless you lived in the country.
One thing that is clear is that money is everything. It makes the world go round and even illegal activities help with that.
The first episode is purely based on money laundering. It’s all about how it’s possible for criminals to get away with it, but just how difficult it would be. There’s a focus on why lawyers get involved and how many people you need on your side to make it possible.
Penn gets in some of the minds who have been convicted of money laundering or of those who blew the whistle on the Greek banks to understand more about why money laundering is secretly an integral part of the global economy and why it will never stop.
If you want something that is educational but fun at the same time, This Giant Beast is something to tune into. You’ll end up watching episodes at least twice because there’s so much information to take in.
