American Gods Season 3 renewal is looking likely on STARZ

The second season hasn’t even premiered yet and we’re looking ahead at American Gods Season 3. The STARZ/Prime Original’s renewal is looking extremely likely.

American Gods Season 2 doesn’t even premiere until next month but all eyes are on a renewal. During the STARZ TCAs last week, the third season renewal was mentioned. While not confirmed, Amerian Gods Season 3 looks extremely likely.

However, I will say that’s over at STARZ. Amazon hasn’t weighed in on whether it will license the season internationally — that’s where it’s a Prime Original. This shouldn’t be an issue but it will depend on the amount of people who tune in for the second season.

What’s more important is the reasons why the third season is only likely and not a sure thing. While some is to do with number of viewers, there’s also the issue of needing a new showrunner (again). Deadline reports that the show is in need of someone else to run the show for the third season and the production doesn’t want to wait so long for the third season! This wait for Season 2 has been excruciating.

For those who thought the second season got a little off track, there’s some good news. American Gods Season 2 is back to more of the book storyline and that’s the way many would like to see the third season follow. While finding a showrunner who will deliver the project on budget and on time, it also needs to offer something the fans want.

To confirm a third season, the showrunner needs to be found. Then that showrunner will need to have a cemented blueprint for the season before even being given the job.

Could Neil Gaiman do it? It doesn’t sound like he’s interested in being the showrunner and more just continuing in his position as an executive producer. But if there’s nobody else and he and Ian McShane (another EP) would like to see the third season being made, you never know.
