American Gods Season 2 is coming in March and it was time for me to check it out. I binged all eight episodes in a day and definitely don’t regret it.

With American Gods Season 2 coming to Amazon Prime Video (internationally, STARZ in the US) in March, I knew I was going to have to catch up. This was one of those shows that slipped through the cracks, forever on my “to watch” list and never finding the time to actually do the watching.

Since I have two kids in the house, watching during my usual viewing time wasn’t an option. There’s no way I could put on an episode or two at the weekend. This isn’t a show for a six- and three-year-old. So, I had to find a time when they were out or in bed. Or when they were both at school and I had a day off.

That came and I’m so glad I finally caught up on American Gods, although I’ll be honest and say at times I was wondering what I was watching. It was weird and strange but in a good way. With two different sets of gods, some excellent casting, and humorous storylines, I found myself drawn into this crazy fantasy world.

There are a few things that I picked up during the marathon I had. The first was how we learned all about the world from our main character. Shadow Moon went through this journey with us, as we and he learned all about the gods without realizing they were even gods. We watched and learned about how his wife died but came back from the dead, how he was manipulated into joining Mr. Wednesday, and his wish to remain out of trouble.

In every show there is one person who brings us into the story. In The Magicians, it was Quentin but in Deadly Class it’s Marcus. Buffy the Vampire Slayer pulled us in through the titular character and American Gods has been a story through Shadow’s eyes.

The difference with American Gods is that we’re learning from scratch. We get to know as much as he does (and sometimes as much as his wife does). Sure, those who have read the books will know more, but if you’re a show-first or show-only fan, you only get to know as much as Shadow and Laura have learned along the way – and, at first, it was only about Shadow.

There are the stories that start each of the episodes, letting us in on the gods, but they still don’t give us much of a clue of what’s going on in Shadow’s journey. The stories give us a chance to understand this growing war between gods instead of the intricacies of their lives.

American Gods doesn’t follow the usual storytelling format for a TV show. In most shows, every episode needs to have its own drama but not all episodes followed that rule. We got an event, sure, but it wasn’t always drama. For example, the episode when Laura swerves the ice cream van had the crash but most of the episode was on the focus on the leprechaun’s story.

I will admit that it was the final episode that got me hooked. Episode 8 finally brought the gods together and touched on this war officially starting. As much as I loved the buildup, now I need to know how the second season will run and I completely understand the frustration of many in waiting for this season.
