Hanna Season 1, Episode 1 review: Setting up the series

Hanna made its first episode available for 24 hours after the Super Bowl. The episode sets up the danger that lurks beyond the forest.

After making my way through what felt like a slog of a Super Bowl, I was excited to check out Hanna. Even though the pilot episode would only be up for 24 hours, it was a great opportunity to see what it had to offer and whether or not I would continue watching the show.

Joel Kinnaman and Mireille Enos were paired up on The Killing, which was a show I greatly enjoyed. They don’t truly have any scenes together in this pilot episode, but I imagine that will change as the series continues. Esme Creed-Miles stars as Hanna and she puts on a compelling performance in “Forest.”

Pilot episodes are almost always set up for a show unless it’s a spin-off and the characters were already established. What Hanna sets up is the story of a teenage girl who has only ever known living in the forest with her father. She wants to get out and explore the world. She knows that something exists beyond the forest, but can’t even begin to imagine what that is.

Enos plays CIA agent Marissa Weigler and Kinnaman plays Erik Heller, a former special forces operative. He’s now considered a fugitive, which led him to raising Hanna in the depths of the forest for her entire life. It’s a father-daughter story that has high stakes because of the danger they’re in.

The show won’t air until March, but this episode does a good enough job at setting up the series for me to want to see what comes next. It’s based on the 2011 movie of the same name, but “Forest” gives us more of the backstory (and makes some changes) that the movie didn’t show.
