3 reasons to watch Fam after the pilot episode
The pilot episode of Fam aired on CBS last night. It’s the perfect guilty pleasure comedy for your Thursday night and here’s why to watch it.
Fam debuted on CBS (and live on CBS All Access) last night. It’s the perfect guilty pleasure comedy to wrap up Thursday’s comedy night.
It’s certainly worth the watch. Whether you tuned in to see Nina Dobrev’s return or to see Gary Cole in another show, you likely found something that will make you come back. Here are three reasons I’ll tune in next week for more.

3. It’s a light-hearted comedy
Sometimes you just want something that isn’t serious. Thursday nights on CBS (apart from S.W.A.T.) are all about the lighthearted comedy and Fam fits right in. It doesn’t take itself seriously and there are no major plot points to follow.
This reminds me of The Big Bang Theory in the beginning and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. A lot of the time, I felt like I was being thrown back into the joys of Friends and other 90s comedies. Perfect with a glass of vino and a night of relaxation.
2. It’s got a great cast
There’s certainly a diverse cast, but that’s nothing without it being good, right? While we want diversity, we still want a good story and good actors. That’s what Fam delivers.
While the show is being promoted on Dobrev and Cole being part of it, Tone Bell is a perfect addition. He was funny (in a loveable over-the-top way that suited the show) but caring at the same time. Brian Stokes Mitchell and Sheryl Lee Ralph didn’t get much time to shine, but when they were on screen, I wanted to know more about them.
This is only after half an hour. I can’t wait to see the next episode.
1. There are touching moments
While comedies are good for laughs, now and then they need to be serious. Fam got a good balance in its pilot episode. We got the comedy of Shannon turning up and Clem trying to manage her perfect life falling apart, but then we also had some serious conversations.
Clem called her dad out and Nick found out his future father-in-law is still alive. Lies and secrets were revealed and they were quickly touched on and treated with care. Most importantly, we got that end scene with Clem wanting Shannon to stay, as they touched on what family (sorry, it’s just “fam” now) really meant.
Like I said, it feels like Friends did back in the day and it’s the mixture of comedy and seriousness in just the pilot that helps bring this feeling. There’s more of this to come.
