Good Omens is one of the highly anticipated new shows coming to Amazon Prime Video. Based on a book by Niel Gaiman, should you read the book before watching the Prime Original?

Amazon has some excellent shows coming up. Good Omens is one of them. While it doesn’t have a release date yet, the casting is outstanding. Future fans of the series can’t overlook the fact that it’s based on a novel by show EP Niel Gaiman. So, should you read the book before watching the series?

I used to think reading the book would always be best, but recently I’ve changed my mind. It’s really going to depend on how you prefer to take in your content. Do you like to have a rough idea of what’s going to happen or do you prefer to remain completely spoiler free?

When it comes to Outlander, for example, I prefer to remain a book behind the show. I’ll read the latest book while the show is on, getting the initial story without spoilers and then getting the details afterward.

Then you need to consider whether you will find a lack of enjoyment if you find changes between book and show. While Gaiman is running the show, there will still be some changes to his book with Sir Terry Pratchett. And these are more than just for time constraints, as some characters from the book will get more development in the show.

Those who enjoy seeing development happening, seeing if they have the same image of a character, or love to get the spoilers will definitely enjoy the book first. Those who love to see how changes work out and find it exciting knowing what could happen but how it differs will most definitely want to check out this book.

When it came to The Vampire Diaries and Pretty Little Liars, I read the books first. I adored seeing how the showrunners took ideas and ran away with them, developing vastly different stories.

If you do want to check out the book first, “Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch” is available on Amazon. Get it with your Prime membership for two-day free shipping, so it gets to you long before Good Omens hits Amazon Prime Video.
