2. The Theory of Everything

Date it premiere: Nov. 26, 2014

Financial and critical acclaim:  The $15m budget movie took in just $208k at opening weekend. It was a slow burn, pulling in $35.8 gross in the U.S. and $123m worldwide. Considering it had a limited release, that wasn’t so bad.

Its critical success was much better. Eddie Redmayne walked away with an Oscar for Best Actor, while Felicity Jones was nominated for Best Actress, the movie was nominated for Best Picture, Anthony McCarten was nominated for his screenplay, and Jóhann Jóhannsson was nominated for his music.

Rotten Tomatoes gives it 78% from the critics, with the audience giving it 84%. Overall, it really was a successful movie.

Why we loved it: We all know who Stephen Hawking was. The late brilliant mind is one of legend. When he started to struggle with AMD, his mind wouldn’t let him be forgotten. This is a man who has inspired generations and The Theory of Everything was a beautiful movie dedicated to his story.

This was more than just a look at his illness. It looked at his overall life and his marriage. The tale was one of accomplishments, love, and literally the theory of everything. If you haven’t watched it yet, I urge you to check it out this year to celebrate its fifth birthday.
