3. The Fault in Our Stars

Date it premiere: June 6, 2014

Financial and critical acclaim: The Fault in Our Stars was the highly anticipated YA novel adaptation. Based on the John Green novel of the same name, the movie quickly pulled fans of the novel in. With an estimated $12m budget, it was definitely a financial success, making $48m on the opening weekend in the United States alone. It went onto make $124.8m in the U.S. and more than $300m around the world.

And it remains popular with audiences and critics. Rotten Tomatoes gives the movie 80% from the critics and 85% from the audience, praising Shailene Woodley for her role of Hazel.

Why we loved it: What wasn’t there to love about The Fault in Our Stars. This is an unapologetically emotional movie. You go in knowing that there isn’t a happy ending, but plenty of lessons to learn along the way.

It’s a beautiful look at life. This isn’t about cancer, but about life and death. It’s a look at feelings because of dealing with a terminal illness and looking for love.

If you haven’t watched it yet, making it one of the movies you put on your list for 2019.
