The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel goes on the road in Season 2, Episode 8. What happens when she doesn’t get paid?

In The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 2, Episode 8, our wonderful Midge goes on a road tour with Susie. What could possibly go wrong? Well, how about when Midge doesn’t get paid at one of her gigs?

For the most part, the road tour is pretty standard. Midge gets a rude awakening to how the rest of the world live on the road. Nope, nobody is bringing the bags in from the car while on tour. She also learns that Susie snores. And yes, Susie definitely needs to see a doctor.

What’s more important is Midge gets a taste of life on the road. Sometimes there aren’t many people to do your comedy for and at other times there are fires that force you to cut your routine short. It’s stressful and tiring. All you want to do is get home to your comfy bed or go to your friend’s baby shower.

Speaking of baby shower, Midge misses her friends’ shower — the one Midge is throwing for her! She calls part way through as she realizes what’s happened and gets her dad to put her on speaker phone to talk to everyone — apologizing profusely.

While Emogene may be happier, Rose definitely isn’t. Midge is left with the clear up because Rose refuses to let Zelda do it.

But the biggest lesson is that sometimes you need a man. You shouldn’t have to need a man, but this is the 1950s. Sometimes a man is necessary. When Midge isn’t paid for a gig because she was 10 minutes late, Susie tries to sort it out only to end up locked in the janitor’s closet. Midge has no choice but to call Joel, who comes down to sort it all out because fortunately, they’re in New York for this last gig.

After a punch to the nose, Joel convinces the club owner’s nephew (or whatever relation he is) to pay up and gets Susie out of the closet — and I feel like there is a bigger hint at Susie with this moment in the episode that the show has been dancing around at this point but not outrightly stated yet.

Anyway, Midge gets her money and everyone can go home. What’s really clear is that while Joel and Midge aren’t together, Joel is still madly in love with his wife and also has her back. This is set for an interesting love triangle coming up surely.
