Barry Jenkins signs first-look deal with Amazon Studios
More and more filmmakers, showrunners, and writers are signing deals with networks and streaming services. Barry Jenkins is the latest, signing a first-look deal with Amazon Studios.
Amazon Studios has another film talent on their roster with an exclusive deal. Barry Jenkins has signed a first-look deal, as many other filmmakers, showrunners, and writers are signing with networks and streaming services exclusively.
The first-look deal is a little different to other exclusive deals. Many studios and companies are looking for all-inclusive deals. They want to keep the talent with them alone, such as Ryan Murphy and Shonda Rhimes joining Netflix exclusively. A first-look deal means that Amazon Studios will have first right of refusal, just as the name of the deal suggests.

This doesn’t mean Amazon will have to accept everything that is sent their way. Nor does it mean Jenkins can’t shop his stuff elsewhere. However, at least he has a company willing to look at everything he has. This deal will be for TV shows for Amazon Prime Video.
Barry Jenkins is already working closely with Amazon Studios. He is directing all 11 episodes of The Underground Railroad, which was confirmed back in June, getting a script-to-series commitment from the production studio. This is set to be a limited series and release date has not yet been confirmed.
Many in the film industry and movie fans will already know Barry Jenkins. After the debut of Medicine of Meloncoly, he produced Moonlight and then If Beale Street Could Talk. All of these movies have received excellent reviews and show the vision that Jenkins has. It’s a no-brainer for Amazon Studios to bring him on.
