The Man in the High Castle Season 3 hit the ground running. Episodes 2-5 offered plenty of twists and turns to surprise.

I’ll be the first to admit that The Man in the High Castle Season 2 wasn’t my favorite. There were storylines slightly lost and others forgotten. Then there were storylines that just didn’t seem quite on point. However, I needed to know where the overall storyline was going, so The Man in the High Castle Season 3 was always something I was going to watch.

After interviewing the cast and EPs, watching the series was even more important. The season premiere made it immediately clear that this was a season for twists and turns. What I didn’t expect was all the twists that happened between Episodes 2 and 3.

I’ll admit that the first two episodes were a little slow to start. There was a lot of catch up on the events from the previous season, starting with Juliana spending time with her sister and getting a chance to see where she was with High Castle. Then there was the chance to see what had happened to Joe and his life back in the States.

Episode 3 was where it really picked up for me. We got more focus on the Neutral Zone and the resistance. Episodes 3 and 4 gave us more focus on the Jewish community, something that should have been focused on far earlier in the series.

One of the biggest twists was learning that Frank had survived after all. Now I need to know how he’d survived. How had Kido seen the body and got photos only for Frank to get out alive? This certainly wasn’t something I expected and instantly made me sit up and stay tuned for more of the twists coming in The Man in the High Castle Season 3.

That next twist that got me was Joe’s storyline. At the end of Episode 5, it was finally clear that he had been brainwashed. No one has actually mentioned “brainwashing,” but it’s clear that is what it is. In a way, Joe has been reprogrammed to believe the Nazi way of life. He’s lost hope that there is a way out and decided it’s easier to play along than to fight.

This gives us a slight difference from Thomas and his sisters. At the end of the second season, we watched Thomas do what he believed to be right; make a sacrifice to save his family. His sisters have clearly learned the Nazi way and believe that is right, much to Helen and John’s shock. They’ve grown up knowing no different, while Joe will likely be old enough to know a little different.

However, it’s not just these different storylines (that really lead to the same place) that I found was the twist to end The Man in the High Castle Season 3, Episode 5. Did anyone else really see Juliana killing him? She did the right thing to keep herself alive but it was definitely not something I ever thought would happen.

While the first season will always be the strongest, The Man in the High Castle Season 3 is definitely proving to be more on-point with its storylines. At Episode 4 I wasn’t sure the storylines could be wrapped, but already some of them look to be joining together. There’s plenty of time to join the rest for this season.
