Lore podcast creator Aaron Mahnke and show EP Howard T. Owens discussed the second season while at NYCC, including how they chose the stories for this second season.

When you have almost 100 episodes on a podcast, choosing just six for Lore Season 2 was always going to be tricky. Then you realize that only four are coming from the podcast, which means being extra picky on the stories you can tell on the screen. During NYCC, podcast creator Aaron Mahnke and show EP Howard T. Owens discussed the process of choosing those episodes.

For the most part, the selection of episodes was the same. What differed was the writer’s room. There was more of an official writers room with the second season, especially with Amazon Studios offering more freedom over the storylines. This, in a way, allowed the show to venture past the podcast, bringing in episodes that weren’t in the podcast.

In fact, that question came up. Why have episodes that aren’t on the podcast? Will these Lore Season 2 episodes ever be on the podcast?

The simple answer to the second question is “no.” And the reason is linked to the answer to the first question. Some stories work better visually, while others work better through audio. In the case of “The Prague Clock” and “Jack Parsons,” the visual elements couldn’t be as effective through audio, so those stories won’t feature on the podcast.

There will be some podcast episodes that will never be turned into episodes, no matter how long Lore Season 2 goes on for. The episodes don’t work as well visually, so it’s better to work to the episodes’ strengths.

Mahnke also shares his love for the episodes chosen and how different they all are. Owens also shared on the changes between the seasons and what the EPs did between the two seasons. Watch the whole interview in the video below.

This is going to be a more dialed-in season. The only regret I have from the interview is not finding out whether Mahnke will be the narrator on Lore Season 2 as he was on the first season.

Also, don’t miss the end of the interview for Aaron Mahnke’s newest podcast series.
