The Boys: Laz Alonso and Karen Fukuhara talk about diversity on the series

There isn’t a lot of diversity in The Boys. Laz Alonso and Karen Fukuhara are two of three or four actors who are people of color, but they’re not your typical people of color. That’s what they talked about while at NYCC 2018.

When it comes to people of color there’s a huge movement (that’s damn-well about time) of them getting lead roles. Charmed, Black Lightning, and Insecure are three off the top of my head that are focusing on people of color in lead, positive roles. The Boys may not have a hugely diverse cast and part of that is due to the original material. However, the diverse cast it does have is good.

Laz Alonso shared the positivity he views his character with. Growing up, he didn’t see many black fathers portrayed in TV. In the course of his career, he’s not had the chance to play many either, but he has played plenty of criminals. Now he gets the chance to play the good guy and a good black father at the same time, and it’s something he’s grateful for.

Meanwhile, Karen Fukuhara plays the only girl in “The Boys.” She’s also one of only two lead females in the series with Erin Moriarty playing the only female in “The Seven.” During the interview, Karen shared what it’s like filming with all-male co-stars and the (lack of) differences. It’s worth noting that she’s the strongest member of “The Boys” and certainly the most dangerous.
