While at NYCC 2018, I sat down with Rufus Sewell and Joel de la Fuente in a roundtable interview with other press publications. If you think their characters John Smith and Takeshi Kido are the villains of The Man in the High Castle, they will tell you they don’t agree.

The Man in the High Castle has made it very clear from the beginning that the world isn’t black and white. It’s not a case of good versus evil. We are all the heroes of our own story. That’s something Rufus Sewell and Joel de la Fuente believe about their own characters. During an NYCC 2018 interview, they discussed more about what’s to come for their characters but also why they don’t view themselves as the big villains.

Fuente puts it well by saying that they don’t see themselves as the black and white villains. He brings up the line from the premiere when Kido says “I’m not a monster.” Both also bring up the fact that the worst things they’ve done were in the first couple of episodes.

Since then, both characters have certainly changed. There are reasons to sympathize with them. We get a hint of what they’ve been through and why they believe they’re doing the right thing. The two characters aren’t characters who will harm for the sake of it. In their mind, it’s for the greater good–for a cause they believe in or for a family they want to protect.

The Man in the High Castle has been shy on backstories over the years. Will we get to see more? That’s something else the two discuss–including whether they would like to see their backstories explored more.
