Beautiful Boy is based on a pair of memoirs. David and Nic Sheff, a father and son duo, share their stories of addiction, recovery, relapse, and survival. This isn’t just about a person going on the initial path to get clean. It’s one about the aftermath and the way a whole family copes with addiction for many years.

And that’s clear from this trailer. We watch as Carell’s David looks back at his son’s life and thinks about the life he wanted for his boy. He and Timothée Chalamet’s Nic shout and scream at each other in a diner, as David tries to figure out his son. Then there’s the pain caused against the whole family and a mention of just how hard addiction is.

One thing Nic had on his side was his family. And because of that, he wanted to make them proud. He wanted to get sober for them.

This is going to be one of those movies that is a strong Oscar contender. At least, it should be. Chalamet has proven his worth in the Beautiful Boy trailer alone.
