Amazon is making a new TV show based on J.R.R Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, but when will Amazon’s Lord of the Rings TV series be released on Prime Video?

Amazon went all-in on their biggest TV project yet, a TV series based on the Lord of the Rings books and stories written by J.R.R. Tolkien. A release date for the Lord of the Rings TV series has not been announced yet. Unfortunately, if you – like the rest of the world – want to see this series soon, it’s probably going to be quite a while before we even get a glimpse of what this series will look like.

At the time of publishing, no one with Amazon, Warner Bros. TV or New Line Cinema has commented on the timeline for this series. The earliest the fans would see episodes of the series is likely 2019. There’s no script, no actors attached and no one leading this series yet, and it’s the end of 2017.

It will take at least a year to figure out the story, find the characters and start production. And, then, depending on the special effects used, you have to factor in a good six months, at least, of promotion.

With all that taken into consideration, summer 2019 is probably the earliest we could see this series if everything goes according to plan on a relatively quick timeline.

Amazon invested so much money for the rights to the Lord of the Rings TV series, the most expensive show of all time at this point in the process. Amazon needs this series to be good, so it makes sense they will take their time to make sure it’s good before rolling it out. If there are production hiccups, expect Amazon to delay the Lord of the Rings TV series.

Still, Amazon needs this show as quickly as possible to help Prime Video compete with Netflix and Hulu, who are each pulling away from Prime Video in the streaming industry. The streaming network failed to make a hit series on the level of Stranger Things, The Handmaid’s Tale and other great shows. With nothing really big in the works other than this Lord of the Rings project, the future of Prime Video rests on its success.
